About Bulky Items

Did you know it is illegal to dump trash and bulky items in front of a home, business, alleyway, trash bin area or on the street?

Bulky items include mattresses, furniture, appliances, electronics, tires and trash that won’t fit in the regular dumpsters or carts. The City of Goleta has seen a dramatic increase in illegally dumped items at the curbside. It is tempting to leave materials on the curb, but not only is it an eyesore, it is a safety hazard and a violation of City Municipal Code. Most importantly, illegal dumping is very expensive to cleanup and has increased the cost of waste management in Goleta. The City encourages all customers to utilize your free bulky item collections to reduce illegal dumping so the City does not have to increase trash rates to support cleaning up illegal dumping.

Pickup Service

Program Rules and Guidelines

1. All items must be brought to the curbside by 6:00AM on the scheduled pickup day
2. Loose items must be bagged, boxed, or bundled
3. Green waste needs to be bagged, bundled, or tied (under 3 feet in length)
4. No construction and remodel materials are acceptable
5. Notify MarBorg if an item is longer than 5 feet or weighs more than 60 lbs

Residential Customers

Bulky item collections are available for residential homes and must be scheduled through the account holder. Residents are entitled to two (2) free bulky item collections annually. Call MarBorg at (805) 963-1852 to schedule a pickup.

Multifamily Residential Customers

Bulky item collections are available for apartments and condos but must be scheduled through the apartment manager, homeowners’ association or account holder. Multifamily residential customers are entitled to two (2) free bulky item collections annually. Call MarBorg at (805) 963-1852 to set up a collection program. It is highly recommended that you pre-schedule your bulky item collections on a recurring schedule that best meets the needs of your property. Generally, it is most effective to schedule these bulky item collections around move-in/move-out periods, and holidays.

E-Waste and White Goods Collection

Residential customers have access to FREE unlimited E-Waste and White Good collection provided by MarBorg Industries. When you call to schedule your pickup please be prepared to set up a day and time within seven (7) days so items are removed in a timely manner.

What is E-Waste? Electronic waste includes items that are powered by batteries or a cord. These items include but are not limited to electronic equipment such as television sets, computer monitors, laptop computers, computer keyboards, and external computer hard drives.

What are White Goods? White Goods include major appliances. These items include but are not limited to washing machines, clothing dryers, hot water heaters, dehumidifiers, conventional ovens, microwave ovens, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, air-conditioners, trash compactors, and residential furnaces.

Battery Collection At Home

Residential customers have a convenient option for recycling used batteries. Households can place their used batteries in a clear plastic bag on top of their recyclables cart, or next to their recyclables dumpster. MarBorg Industries will collect and recycle the used batteries on the customer's normal collection day.

Sharps Collection

Residential customers can receive FREE sharps waste collection. Mail-in sharps waste containers are provided by MarBorg Industries. These containers are one-gallon with postage pre-paid return packaging.

About Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Household Hazardous Waste products exhibit one or more of the following characteristics and must be disposed of properly:

CORROSIVE Substance or vapor that can cause irreversible damage to skin or other material.

FLAMMABLE Easily ignites at almost any temperature.

REACTIVE Gives off toxic vapors or explodes when combined with air, water, or other products.

TOXIC May poison, injure or cause death when eaten, inhaled or absorbed through the skin.

It is illegal for area landfills to accept HHW. It is vitally important to keep HHW out of landfills where it may affect water quality and impact area resources. When water infiltrates buried waste it can collect a variety of harmful substances, and carry them into ground and surface water supplies as landfill leachate.

Medication

In June 2016, the County Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance that requires pharmaceutical manufacturers that sell product in our county to establish and fund a free collection program for unwanted household medications.

MED-Project, the organization implementing the program on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry, installed the first round of collection kiosks in March 2018. Sites in the Goleta & UCSB area include: CVS Pharmacy (5875 Calle Real and 189 Turnpike Road) and the Sheriffs Department, Isla Vista Substation (6504 Trigo Road). Additional sites around Santa Barbara County can be found in the "Where to Go" section and can also be accessed on MED-Project's website.

Common Household Hazardous Waste

Textiles

• Many people don’t know that you can not only recycle textiles but that it is also FREE. MarBorg offers a free recycling drop-off program for textiles. You can drop off textiles such as clothing, clean rags, scrap cloth, fabric, matching shoes, purses, and backpacks. However, it is not permitted to drop off any items that are contaminated, wet, or soiled. You can drop off your clean textiles to the Goleta Recycling Center (20 David Love Place) or the South Coast Recycling and Transfer Station. 

Plastic Bags / Film Plastic

• Not only can you recycle textiles, but you can also recycle certain types of plastic bags and film packaging. The first requirement is that your bags are clean and dry. The types of bags that are recyclable are popped air pillows, newspaper bags, dry cleaner bags, retail bags, case wrap (beverage case/snack wrap), napkin, paper towel, bathroom tissue, and diaper wraps, bubble wrap, and bubble-only envelopes, and inside out bread bags. The Community Environmental Council (CEC), Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, and Ablitt’s are all accepting film plastic drop offs by appointment only. Email sales@ablitts.com to request to receive information about upcoming dates. Learn more about plastic film recycling on  CEC's website or Santa Barbara Channelkeeper's website. While this is a great option when you can’t avoid film plastic, we do encourage everyone to try and avoid film plastics as much as possible by following these waste reduction tips on lessismore.org. While grocers are not handling reusable bags due to COVID-19, you can still put them in your car and bag them yourself to avoid plastic bags. 

Styrofoam / EPS

• Clean Styrofoam that “snaps into pieces” can be recycled at the Goleta Recycling Center.  No packing peanuts, foam that once held food, packing foam sheets, pool noodles, or concrete-coated foam. If it bends without snapping, it cannot be recycled. Clean foam can be turned into mirror and picture frames!

Medicine

• If you need to dispose of medicines, you can take them to most of your local pharmacies and other locations. Find a map of participating pharmacies here.

Tires

• Tires are made up largely of rubber and steel, which can be separated and recycled. Please find more information about recycling tires here.

Bin Steam Cleaning

Each year residential customers can receive one (1) FREE bin steam cleaning provided by MarBorg Industries. Any additional cleanings will carry an additional charge.

Holiday Tree Collection

Residential customers can place their holiday trees at the curb or at another permitted set-out site for FREE collection during the holidays. Trees must be free of all ornamentation and stands removed.
