The City of Goleta was incorporated in 2002, making it one of the youngest cities in California. Goleta’s eight square miles are nestled between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, offering unparalleled scenic beauty. More than 30,000 people live in Goleta, and many more commute to work here. The City is on the cutting edge of the high-tech and entrepreneurial business community. The Santa Barbara Airport and the University of California are both adjacent to the City’s boundaries, making it the perfect place to do business. For a small city, there are many large, well-known companies who make their home in Goleta, and new and innovative businesses are popping up each year.

Quality of life for our residents is enhanced by local beaches, mountains and the City’s large number of developed parks and natural open spaces. Goleta is a bicycle-friendly community, and our inventory of bike paths continues to grow. The Goleta Community Center provides a home for a wide array of community-based activities and services and the City’s beloved Goleta Valley Library serves as the regional main library for many residents on the Santa Barbara south coast. Excellent police, fire and emergency response make us a safe community. Since 2013, Goleta has consistently made “safest city” lists from a variety of organizations.

The City is governed by a five-member City Council with a directly-elected mayor. It is a General Law City, with a Council-Manager form of government. This system of local government combines the political leadership of elected officials with the managerial experience of an appointed local government manager. City Manager Robert Nisbet, oversees more than 125 staff members in eight departments: City Manager’s Office, City Attorney, City Clerk, Finance, General ServicesLibrary, Neighborhood Services, Planning and Environmental Review, and Public WorksPolice services in Goleta are provided through a contract with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff, and the Santa Barbara County Fire Department provides fire prevention and suppression services. Various boards and commissions made up of community volunteers advise the City Council and staff.

The City of Goleta’s dedicated team of elected officials, professional employees and volunteers are united in the mission to ensure that Goleta remains the perfect place to live, work and play. Their goal is to conduct City business in the most efficient, transparent and professional way possible to support a vibrant and sustainable community.
