Every time you travel on a city street, take a stroll on the sidewalk, or spend some time at one of the many parks and opens spaces in our City, you are surrounded by the services provided by the Public Works Department. From constructing, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining city streets and sidewalks to creating and maintaining the urban forest, parks and open spaces, Public Works is all around you. Public Works also administers the Capital Improvement Program that creates needed infrastructure within the community.
The Public Works Department is comprised of eight Divisions including Administration, Engineering, Parks and Open Space, Capital Improvement Program, Street Lighting, Traffic Engineering Operations and Maintenance, Street Maintenance, and Solid Waste and Environmental Services.

Capital Improvement Program - Identifies, funds, designs and constructs City infrastructure improvements such as roads, bridges, buildings, utilities, etc.

Engineering Division - Provides management and oversight for engineering design, construction, and maintenance of the City’s infrastructure, land development review and engineering approvals of private development within the City, and preparation of conditions of approval for development projects. Provides permits and inspection for work in the public right of way.

Environmental Services - The Environmental Services Division’s mission is to help create a clean, sustainable Goleta through watershed protection and responsible materials management (recycle, reduce, reuse), while complying with environmental regulations. This division includes Storm Water and Solid Waste. We provide our community with resources and tools to help protect our ocean and watersheds, and to reduce, reuse, and recycle, with the ultimate goal of zero waste.

Parks and Open Spaces - The Parks and Open Spaces Division is responsible for maintaining 15 City parks, and 10 open spaces, totaling approximately 482 acres. The division is also responsible for maintaining 31 landscaped street medians, as well as 6800 street trees within the City right-of-way.

Street Maintenance - Maintains the City right of way, including streets, sidewalks, traffic signals, storm drains, and administers the Street Sweeping Program.
