Home MenuMethacrylate Deck Sealing Project
This major maintenance project involved the cleaning, repair and sealing of seven bridge decks to prevent damage caused by water intrusion. The bridges are: the Patterson Avenue Overhead, the Cathedral Oaks Road Bridge over San Pedro Creek, the Cathedral Oaks Road Bridge over Carneros Creek, the Los Carneros Road Bridge over Tecolote Creek, the Calle Real Bridge over San Jose Creek, the Glen Annie Road Bridge and the Fairview Avenue Overhead Bridge. In addition, the joint seals on the Shirrell Way Bridge over Las Vegas Creek were replaced.
Bridge decks are reinforced concrete slab elements that flex slightly with traffic loads. Hairline cracks in the concrete can develop into larger cracks which can shorten the life expectancy of the structure if preventative maintenance is not performed. Water can seep into these cracks and cause rusting of the reinforcing steel. Methacrylate is a high molecular density polyester resin that goes deep into these cracks, preventing water from entering and thereby preventing this type of damage from occurring.
Funding for this project was a combination of Highway Bridge Program (HBP) and Measure A funds. 88.53% of the funding came from the HBP.
Construction Completed in December 2013. Notice of Completion Filed March 2014.
