Hollister Class I Bike Path

Description

The Hollister Avenue Class I Bike Path Safe Routes to Schools project constructed a Class I Bike/ Multi-Purpose path along the south side of Hollister Avenue from Pacific Oaks Road to Ellwood Elementary School. The project included re-striping of Hollister Ave and reconstruction of the existing median islands, reducing the through traffic lanes from 13 feet wide to 11 feet wide to accommodate the new path within existing City right of way. The new facility includes a 14 foot wide concrete path with a 5 foot landscape buffer adjacent to Hollister Avenue. The previously existing 5 foot Class II bike lanes remain along both sides of Hollister Avenue. Existing signals at Pacific Oaks, Entrance Road, and at Ellwood School were modified to accommodate the project.

Helpful information to know about the path includes:

The class two bike lane remains along the roadway on Hollister Avenue for experienced cyclists who choose not to use the new path.
The new path contains separate lanes for riders and pedestrians. Riders must stay in the designated lanes (marked with a bicycle) while pedestrians can walk anywhere on the path. There is also a designated lane for pedestrians that riders cannot enter. Please use good judgement when using the path as all this is a new type of path for many and people are still learning.
Riders and walkers are expected to stop at the stop signs placed at intersections along the path.
The crosswalk is an extension of the multi-use path and the same rules must be followed. Areas of the crosswalk are designated for walkers (white and red striped lines) and riders (green circles), please use the correct one.

Purpose and Need

South of Hollister Avenue from Pacific Oaks west to Ellwood Elementary is a dense residential area. School children living there who would love to be able to enjoy the benefits of bicycling to school but cannot because the existing wide avenue with only Class II bike lanes is not suited for younger children. Of the 481 kids who attend the school, only 25 ride their bikes while over 300 walk. The facility will also serve commuters and UCSB students, as well as recreational riders.

Funding Sources

Measure A and Measure A Alternative Transportation Grants, Measure A Local, and Goleta Transportation Impact Program funds are covering the engineering costs. The City was awarded a $1.6 million Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant for project construction.
