This project replaced the existing bridges with a new Cathedral Oaks Road overcrossing over Highway 101 and a new overhead bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad to align with Cathedral Oaks Road. Also included in this project was the reconstruction of Highway 101 southbound on/off ramps and the demolition of the existing overcrossing and overhead bridges. The new bridges have two through lanes and a median turn lane, bike lanes and sidewalk on the west side of the structures. The project also widened Calle Real west of Cathedral Oaks Road to include four foot wide shoulders on both sides of the road.
This project replaced the structurally deficient overcrossing and the overhead bridge at Cathedral Oaks Road and Highway 101 as well as addressed the operational inadequacies of the existing freeway crossing alignment. The existing overcrossing was neither pedestrian nor bicycle friendly, having very narrow shoulders and an outdated bridge rail. Calle Real was also widened in order to meet current design standards.
Funding for this project came from a variety of sources including a combination of Highway Bridge Program (HBP), State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) and Goleta Transportation Improvement Program (GTIP) funds.
There is still some landscaping to be done.
The project was a partnership between Caltrans and the City of Goleta.
