In order to end homelessness, we must prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place. Prevention means that people who are struggling to pay rent do not end up living in their vehicles, going to homeless shelters, or living on the streets.

Unfortunately, Goleta rents are so high that the risk of homelessness is present for over 50% of people who rent. The Goleta Housing Element  reports that 75% of lower-income renter households spend more than half of their income on rent.

To help people struggling to pay rent, the City of Goleta contracts with the Rental Housing Mediation Program to help landlords and tenants work out a fair and just solution to their rent struggle.

For people who are facing imminent homelessness, Good Samaritan Shelter offers a Diversion Hotline.

But, the best way to prevent homelessness is to provide sufficient affordable housing. The City of Goleta’s Planning and Environmental Review Department offers a comprehensive strategy through the Goleta Housing Element and other efforts to ensure that people in Goleta can live where they work.
