Department of Statistics and Applied Probability, UCSB

In the last decade or so, applications of AI, such as driverless cars and ChatGPT, are making headlines.

This brief history of AI will give a bird's eye view of the discipline compared to statistics.

Across industry and academia, using AI as a general tool is changing how we live and work.

A few examples will highlight the current trends.

Looking to the future, challenges such as fairness and interpretability remain for the responsible application of AI and statistics.

This talk for non-technical audiences will cut through the technical jargon using plain language and analogies.

Presented by the Friends of the Goleta Valley Library Lecture Series.
