Enjoy a sweet and savory tour of the street foods of Cairo, Baghdad, and Istanbul!
Each of these renowned cities has its own distinctive specialties, including amazing varieties of refreshing beverages, delicious snacks, freshly baked breads, grilled vegetables, bean stews, vegetarian pastas dishes, fried meatballs, grilled meats, and layered pastries---all prepared using an artist's palette of flavorings and spices.
The talk will include a discussion of the centuries-old development of these cuisines and how they have been affected by the onset of modernity and globalization.
It will also feature a cooking demonstration of a popular Middle Eastern street-food recipe.
The tour will be conducted by Juan and Magda Campo of the UCSB Department of Religious Studies, who co-teach a course on Middle Eastern culinary cultures.
Presented by The Friends of the Goleta Valley Library Lecture Series.
