How to Use a HAWK Signal

Description

The project upgraded the existing crosswalk on Hollister Avenue at the Goleta Community Center by installing a High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) system to replace the existing flashing beacon. The pedestrian activated HAWK system has proven to be highly visible to oncoming traffic, competing better with surrounding visual distractions.

Purpose and Need

According to pedestrian reports, drivers along Hollister Avenue have a low compliance rate with the existing pedestrian activated flashing beacon system located at the crosswalk. The existing flashing beacon does not seem to capture the driver’s attention at the 5 lane road section. Pedestrians must wait for gaps in traffic to cross the street safely. The HAWK system has success in grabbing drivers’ attention and increasing compliance to stop for pedestrians at the crosswalk.

Funding Sources

Funding for this project is a combination of Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) and  Transportation Development Account (TDA) funds.
