Project Description
The LED Street Lighting Project was completed in Fall 2022. Installation began in September 2021 and finished at the end of October that same year. The project installed energy efficient LED fixtures on 1,464 streetlights throughout Goleta after acquiring the streetlights from Southern California Edison (SCE) in 2020.
The project is expected to save Goleta over 345,000 kilowatt hours and approximately $115,000 in energy costs yearly. In addition to saving the City money, the new lights will require less maintenance and provide clearer lighting.

Public Input and Education
Outreach and public input was of great importance when approaching this project. This outreach is summarized below:
The project was approved by City Council on July 20, 2021, to start the streetlight fixture conversions. This meeting is available to view here.
The City held a virtual Town Hall on June 22, 2021, to discuss this project with the community. The two-hour interactive meeting started with a brief presentation, and was followed by an extensive Q&A session discussing the light color, brightness, shielding and more. The project team also met with members from neighborhood groups throughout the project.
The City held five public meetings regarding their LED street light project. There were three Green and Energy Committee meetings and two City Council meetings.
In early 2021, the City conducted a pilot study which installed new Light-Emitting Diode (LED) streetlights in a small section of western Goleta to test four different types of LED streetlights. The goal of the pilot study was to evaluate and select one LED streetlight to be used throughout Goleta for the LED Street Lighting Project.
