Ellwood Mesa Open Space and the Monarch Butterfly Grove Are Among Goleta’s Most Loved Natural Places
We created this Ellwood Information portal to help the community follow and participate in our efforts to improve habitat, safety, access and community engagement.
Since 2017, the City of Goleta and its team of consultants have been studying Ellwood Mesa and the monarch butterfly grove to address urgent concerns of high fire risk and the rapidly declining characteristics of the monarch overwintering sites. Studies are being conducted by the City Parks and Open Space Manager, biologists, butterfly experts, GIS technicians, botanists, arborists, avian and wildlife experts, and landscape architects. We are eager to share the data we’ve collected and the plans we’ve developed, and to keep you informed as we move through the permitting process and begin implementing these critical projects.
